Presenting for the very first time, a music weekend that K-Earth 101 aired every year from 1978 through 1990 over Labor Day Weekend. The Number Ones of Rock & Roll Weekend contains every single song that peaked at #1 across Los Angeles as compiled by several local radio stations music surveys, including the KFWB Fab 40, the KHJ Boss 30, the KRTH weekly music surveys and others. Music specials and themed weekends were very common on K-Earth 101 back in the 1980's under PD's Bob Hamilton and Phil Hall, showcasing their vast music playlists. In the early to mid 80's, this was known as "Southern California's Number One Music Weekend" It's a Southern California Music Tradition!!
These rare recordings have been provided by San Diego area resident Vince Daniels, who originally recorded these on high quality cassettes. These airchecks were recorded in segments over two years. In 1989, the number ones of 1970 through 1976 were recorded in one sweep. In 1990, the number ones of 1955 through early 1970 were recorded over two seperate programming runs that Labor Day Weekend.
The 1989 and 1990 airchecks were then connected as one to create an entire special from start to finish for all music and radio fans to enjoy and remember how KRTH once sounded and the incredible music they once played, especially over a holiday weekend. KRTH aired the special twice to fill the entire Labor Day Weekend beginning at 12 noon on Friday, meaning once the last year ended, it restarted with 1955 again. The second run usually began sometime mid-morning on Sunday and ended very late Monday into the early wee hours.
You will chronologically hear all the timeless music and styles, classic Johnny Mann jingles and legal ID's, promos, liners, some commercials (most were not recorded), PSA's and other air chatter. You'll hear the legendary Brian Beirne (Mr. Rock & Roll), Jeff Davis, Joe Daniels, Lisa Moree, Bernadette, George Matthews, Steve Scott, Jay Coffey and Jeff Davis once again.
A huge thank you to Robert Buffington for providing the list of songs online.

The number ones of 1977 through 1985 were unfortunately not recorded as an aircheck, but will be presented here as a 'home production' so you can enjoy the entire 1955-1985 special. Several extended versions of dance and disco classics were aired on K-Earth 101 during this weekend special back in the 1980's.
I am not affialiated with K-Earth 101. Just a music radio fan providing this timeless and memorable aircheck for your enjoyment. I call it Radio Gold. Enjoy!!
